Gradjagan Bay, situated inside the Alas Purwo National Park in the eastern part of Java is home to the world-class barreling left-hand reef break known as G-land. Through Damara Surf’s surf development course Indonesia, I was lucky enough to get to G-land many times. If you rock up to this place on a pumping swell, I promise you will be doing at least six hours in the lineup and frothing for more. Join me as I dive into the details of this surfers’ paradise, share insider tips, and help you plan your ultimate adventure!
The Magic of Gradjagan Bay’s Waves
Nestled along Java’s southern coast, Gradjagan Bay is perfectly positioned to receive quality long period swells from distant low-pressure systems that pulse across the Indian Ocean uninterrupted. From April to October, during Indonesia’s dry season, the southeast offshore trade winds sculpt these swells into epic waves, creating ideal surfing conditions. What sets G-Land apart is its consistent, pumping swell, all-day offshore winds and remote location, making it a must-visit destination for surf enthusiasts worldwide.
Surfing Highlights: Tiger Tracks & 20/20’s
During my surf development course, I had the privilege of exploring G-Land’s iconic breaks, including Tiger Tracks and 20/20’s. For an intermediate level surfer you can find arguably the best waves of your life in these spots with virtually empty lineups, while expert surfers indulge in the world-famous, perfect barrels provided by neighboring spots such as Kongs, Money Tress, Speedies.
A Day in G-Land
Prepare for an action-packed day. On these day trips we would leave anywhere between 4 and 6am depending on the tide schedule. The journey would be around 2 hours altogether from camp. Time your arrival just right to catch mid-tide for primo surfing conditions, and be sure to slap on plenty of sunscreen well in time before entering the water. G-Land national park has it’s own micro-climate – you can expect clear blue skys and pristine but reflective water. It’s a breathtaking sight, but beware: the sun’s rays here can be as fierce as they are inviting! And be careful at low tide; those sneaky reefs can be real ankle biters!
Beyond the Break: Monkey Business and Munchies
Beyond surfing, immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Alas Purwo National Park. The national park boasts a variety of indigenous animals. Expect to see wild boars, peacocks and deer. During one of our visits, our driver even filmed a wild jaguar, just steps away from us while we were surfing! The rainforest is lush and buzzing with amazing wildlife. However, be wary of the park’s resident monkeys, known for their mischievous antics. Don’t bring anything too valuable because there is really no good place to hide your things, including the car …as I got to find out.

Wrapping Up
A day trip to G-land will be unforgettable for you. I can still close my eyes and think of several different waves I rode at that place. The beauty of the location is absolutely stunning, just rainforest as far as the eye can see, while sitting in the lineup. You are surfing in a national park. Cell service is also limited, so you can really feel like you are connecting with nature here. I hope this convinces you to go have an epic day of surf in Gradjagan Bay. Yewww!.
